If you’ve ever stepped into a new pair of boat shoes and ran for the dock only to stop and think, “Wait, are boat shoes waterproof?” you’re in good company. In fact, it’s one of the most common questions we get. We know you’re passionate about the water and your boat shoes, so we’re here to clear things up.

While Sperrys aren’t technically waterproof, they are water-friendly and it’s more than OK to get them wet (they were created for slippery boat decks, after all). Your Sperrys can handle water and will eventually dry, with a patina that looks even better than they did pre-soak (in our humble opinion). But they won’t actually keep your feet dry.

If you do happen to get them wet, don’t stress. They only get better with age as salt water and normal wear give them a seasoned look unique to every wearer. Oh, and bonus: The salt water we just mentioned sticks to the laces, keeping them tied even longer.

The verdict? Sperrys are water-friendly and getting them wet will only add to their character—even if your day on the water goes overboard.
